Ever wanted to know what we get up to on the RSC graduate scheme? In this blog, members of our graduate scheme describe some of the interesting (or unusual!) activities and projects they are working on, as well as what it is like to work in a variety of departments across the RSC.

Debbie – Public Affairs

We’re now all over halfway through our current rotation and for me; this is my third and final one.  Having worked in Membership Development and Schools and Colleges, I’m now in Public Affairs, a new rotation for the Grad Scheme and I’m getting to try my hand at all sorts of new shiny things.

I joined the Public Affairs team at possibly their busiest time – the run up to the General Election.  After a crash course in basic UK politics, my first task was to identify likely election candidates with an interest in science and write profiles on them.  Getting new (or re-elected) MPs to support our campaigns on specialist teachers and science funding is really important for influencing new policies and legislation.  As the election results didn’t quite match the polls(!), I’ve been busy writing up some additional profiles over the past few weeks.

I’ve also had the chance to attend a few events – including one in Parliament.  The most recent one was all about law making, chaired by Krishnan Guru-Murthy, and cemented my view that making laws is highly complicated!  But at least I now know where to look for information about them.

As well as dabbling in politics, I’ve also been working for the Communications team (there’s quite a lot of cross over between the two teams).  So far, I’ve tried my hand at speechwriting and written articles for our internal newsletter on our fundraising for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and languages lunches.

General Grad Scheme activities have continued into this rotation, including interview training and writing for Chemistry World.  I’ve been involved in some of our outreach activities: Cambridge Science Festival, the Global Experiment and the June Public Lecture, on air pollution.  And I’ve been lucky to be part of two teams that were given recognition awards, one for Online CPD for Teachers and the other for the 175 Faces of Chemistry project.

There’s still plenty of fun things to come in our last few months on the scheme – including the Summer Party, which promises to be very glitzy!
