On the 21 May 2011 the RSC Deccan Section conducted a demonstration come workshop on “Chemistry in Everyday Life” for women, students and the general public in Hyderabad.
On the 21 May 2011 the RSC Deccan Section conducted a demonstration come workshop on “Chemistry in Everyday Life” for women, students and the general public in Hyderabad.
The chief guest at the event was Dr. Mrs. Chaganti Krishna Kumari, a retired Associate Professor and a science writer on popular science books. She addressed the gathering for about 15-20 min, speaking on Chemistry in Kitchen.
Professor. V. Peesapati (Honary Secretary for the RSC Deccan Section), Prof.V.Jayathirtha Rao and Mr. Pratap Reddy got involved with the event with a number of experimental demonstrations.
The demonstrations included:

The use of Red cabbage extract to determine the pH of several household items including: (i) Lemon Juice; (ii) Vinegar; (iii) Sodium Bi Carbonate, sodium carbonate, soap powder and Domex.

Silver Mirror Test – coating of silver over a glass surface

The program was conducted over 3 hours and attracted over 80 participants. All participants and especially students interacted with the speakers and have gained an appreciation for the role of chemistry in everyday life.
