Calling all final year PhD students!

RSC Organic Division Poster Symposium sponsored by F. Hoffmann-La Roche – Now open for applications

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s Organic Division are holding the RSC Organic Division Poster Symposium on 01 December 2014, at The Royal Society of Chemistry, London. This is a fantastic opportunity for final year organic chemistry PhD students to showcase their work and to network with academics and industrial scientists.

The symposium has a tradition of being the most competitive and highly regarded organic chemistry symposium for PhD students in the UK and ROI. The Organic Division took on organisation of the event from Pfizer in 2011 and we are delighted to receive support from a wide range of companies, including our headline sponsor F. Hoffmann-La Roche, Ltd. This year we will be offering a first prize of £500, two runner-up prizes of £250, and an Industry prize, also receiving £500.

For more information and to submit your abstract go to http://rsc.li/organic-poster

Glasgow Careers Hub

We will be running a careers hub in Glasgow from the 25-27th August at the Holiday Inn Theatreland. Members will be able to attend a consultation or pop along to our Profiles in Chemistry and networking evening on the 26th August. They will need to register through the email which has been sent out to all members in the local area.

Registrations are now open for this free event dedicated to addressing barriers to career progression in the chemical sciences.
Open to early career researchers, postdoctoral researchers and final-year PhD students, the Conference seeks to:

  • Raise the aspirations of young chemists
  • Address barriers to career progression
  • Increase the confidence of delegates when presenting, networking and raising their public profile
  • Promote diversity and an inclusive working culture
Please visit the conference website for the latest on the exciting programme of workshops, one-to-one consultations and keynote speeches from world-renowned experts.

Giving students industrial experience

In 2013/2014 we ran a pilot programme in the south west collaborating with 5 colleges to support their ‘Access to Science’ course. As part of our collaboration individuals successfully completing this course gained industrial experience and became eligible for Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) status.

We are now rolling this programme out on a wider scale, with 30 colleges across the country already volunteering to take part in 2014-2015. We are asking employers to get involved and support the work project module by offering work experience. This could be simply submitting a project to the college or allowing a student to come into your workplace to carry out the work. (NB: students on this course are all over 19 years old.)

Some examples of projects may include (but not limited to):
• Method/process validation
• Method/process development
• Cleaning validation
• Instrument operation qualification
• Instrument performance qualification
• Sample preparation investigation/development
• Batch/bulk analysis

Employers are not expected to pay any wages for this work and there may be an opportunity to interview students to select the person who is assigned the project, further adding to the professional experience.
If you are an employer and would like to enhance a student’s learning experience and nurture the talents of a budding scientist do please get in touch with us at registers@rsc.org.

The Chemists’ War

Michael Freemantle tells the stories of chemists in the First World War and explains how their work underpinned and shaped what became known as The Chemists’ War. Pre-order your book today.

CPD for Teachers

Advancing excellence in chemistry teaching

Learn when and where it’s convenient for you with our new online CPD courses for teachers.

We’re launching five modules throughout 2014. Each module covers a key chemical concept and provides ideas and resources you can try in the classroom to enhance your lessons.

Our quantitative chemistry module is free to access until 31 August 2014.

Chemical Science moves to Gold Open Access

Chemical Science, launched in 2010, will become the world’s first high-quality Open Access chemistry journal. From Issue 1, 2015 this flagship journal is moving to Gold Open Access, and all content published from that issue will be free to every reader.

Plus, unlike other Gold Open Access journals, we will waive all Article Processing Charges (APCs) for at least two years. So it will be free for authors too.

We believe that Gold Open Access is a sustainable model for the future of publishing. Chemical Science will enhance our wider Open Access offering, which also includes Gold for Gold vouchers.

Christmas Cards

If you wish to order RSC Christmas cards to send out to selected members of your section, please send an email request to msadmin@rsc.org by 30 September. Please include the selection criteria of the members (e.g. over 70 or retired) and we will arrange to dispatch the cards and address labels to you at the end of October.

RSC Journal Impact Factors

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s reputation as a high-quality, high-impact publisher was further reinforced on Tuesday 29th July as the 2013 Impact Factors were announced. See all the figures and individual journals’ highlights on our blog

Diversity and Inclusion Tip of the Month

Consider your audience: are you appealing to the entire demographic of your network? If this is difficult over the course of one event, it might be possible over the course of multiple events.
