New Officers Briefing dayThis year’s New Officers’ Briefing Day will be held on 14 July 2017 at Burlington House, London. This is a great opportunity to find out about best practices and network with other committee members. Please feel free to pass this invite on to any members of your committee that may be interested in taking up an Officer position in the future; we understand that knowledge of the role and responsibilities will be a key factor in deciding to take up such a position. For the first time, this year we would also like to invite those members who represent the Chemists’ Community Fund on our Local Section committees.
Chemistry Week – 20 – 26 November 2017We are pleased to announce that this year’s theme for Chemistry Week is ‘Global Science’ to celebrate the global nature of Chemistry and the success that comes from collaborations and our International community. We want to support you with activities and events in Chemistry Week, from inspiring the next generation, with personal stories about where chemistry has taken you, to celebrating the diversity of discovery within our community. Grants of up to £750 are now available and all applications will be considered whether you need £50 to purchase consumables or £500 for venue hire and catering, simply apply using the following link Chemistry Week grants (http://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/Y465T/). We are running a rolling application process with deadlines on the 27th of every month until September or once all funds have been fully allocated. The next deadline is 27 March 2017.

Take part in the 2nd Employment Survey for European ChemistsThe 2nd Employment Survey for European Chemists (ESEC2), which is being run by the European Chemistry Thematic Network Association (ECTN) and by the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS).The survey, which is completely anonymous, will be open from 1 March until 31 March 2017, and its main objective is to create a clear snapshot of the chemistry labour market. This snapshot will allow an analysis of educational offer and labour market needs, gender balance, salary differences, etc. As the situation of chemistry greatly differs from country to country (as the previous iteration of this survey shows) please make sure you take part so that we gather enough information from the UK to allow a specific analysis of data. In the 2013 EuCheMS survey, the UK provided the second highest number of survey respondents and we’d like to be just as well represented in 2017. It only takes around 10 minutes to complete and is open until the end of March.Complete the survey now.

McBain Medal: Assembly and pattern formation in complex soft materials
27 March 2017
SCI Belgrave Sq, London, UK
This one day meeting in London will focus on recent advances in colloid and interfacial science as a route to materials and processes with societal value, with distinguished speakers both from industry and academia. The meeting will close with the McBain Lecture, awarded annually by the RSC/SCI Joint Colloids Group to recognize a rising star in colloid and interface science. This year’s awardee is Dr João Cabral from Imperial College London, for his outstanding work on the thermodynamics and assembly of colloid and polymer mixtures, and the design of functional materials via interfacial instabilities. An enthusiast of scattering, his team and collaborators have pioneered the use of neutron and X-rays to study flow processing of complex fluids in complex microfluidic flows.
