EU survey on the €100bn 2021-27 Horizon Europe framework programme
The European Commission are seeking views from organisations and individuals on the priorities and impact measures for Horizon Europe. We have been making the case for the programme to maintain its focus on excellence and to enable broad third country participation for the benefit of both the EU and its citizens and third countries. These recommendations will form the basis of our response to the European Commission’s survey.

We would like to encourage you to respond to the survey by September 8 2019 to ensure our community’s views are well-represented: the Commission have made it clear that all submissions will be given equal weight. You are welcome to use our recommendations, but insights from your own area of chemistry will be particularly valuable for the last question on impacts.

Thank you for reading!

We welcome any feedback you have on what you would like included in this newsletter; please email any suggestions to networks@rsc.org.

Kind regards,

The Networks Team

Updated member group logos
We’re pleased to be rolling out the updated logos to our member groups, and you should have received these by email from the Networks team last week, along with some guidance on how to use them.

You’ll notice that the format of the logos is slightly different from the previous versions. This is because through our extensive research with members, they told us that our logo is recognisable and that many people refer to the Royal Society of Chemistry as ‘the RSC’.

In response to this feedback and to avoid making the new logos large and unwieldy, we’ve introduced a descriptor plus the group name. This is a neater way of presenting the logo and avoids them being too large, especially when used digitally.

Each logo includes the new marque shape, which is designed to be much more like a ‘C’ in response to feedback from our community, and is recognisable as the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The type of group is on the top line, e.g. RSC LOCAL SECTION:
2a0d1d2952242df3970cb9e4e8283e44-huge-rs

The name of the group is on the bottom line, e.g. ENERGY SECTOR:
9978fabbf91b50691c76cd611674d67c-huge-rs

Logo formats
Your new logo is available in .jpg, .png, and .ai file formats for different uses. Please use the .ai file if working with a supplier for printed materials as this is a print file type. You can use either the png or jpg logos for digital use.

In response to your feedback, the logos have been supplied with the correct exclusion zone already included, to make it easier for you to use (this is the white space around the logo). Please don’t trim this exclusion zone any further.

RSC logo and brand guidelines
You can download the brand guidelines and main RSC logo in various sizes and formats from our brand microsite: brand.rsc.org. The brand guidelines are also available here: rsc.org/FormsDocuments

Brand fonts
If you’re producing materials and want to use the brand fonts, you can download Bree Serif for free form Google fonts (see details in the brand guidelines). Bree Serif should only be used for headlines and large formats.

You can use Arial for all other copy and text uses, which is a standard font available on all computers.

New PowerPoint template
We have also created a new PowerPoint template in the new brand, which is available for you to download from rsc.org/FormsDocuments here in both widescreen (16:9) and standard (4:3) format.

Brand centre
Materials available to order on the brand centre are being updated into the new brand. Everything should be updated by the end of September 2019.

About our brand refresh
You can read more about the brand refresh in this news article from April 2019 or in the brand refresh Spotlight article in the March 2019 Networks Newsletter.

Any questions, please contact networks@rsc.org.

Communications from across the RSC
Here are updates about events and activities from our Outreach, Careers, Events, International, and Research & Innovation teams, as well as the Chemists’ Community Fund and RSC Publishing.

RSC Breaking the Barriers report celebrated on 20 June
The report won Best Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Campaign at the 2019 memcom excellence awards in June

Breaking the Barriers highlighted the systemic barriers that women in the UK’s chemical sciences academia face. The report was based on a major survey, interviews, focus groups and data gathered across the community. This bold and groundbreaking research gave us insights into the reasons why women interested in academic careers are not progressing to senior grades or reaching their potential as their male counterparts do.

Our campaign to achieve
#ChemEquality resulted in significant media coverage and a huge volume of supportive social media posts from members of our community, which impressed the judges.

Find out more about how Breaking the Barriers is continuing to implement recommendations, including our new
Grants for Carers, on our Inclusion & Diversity pages.

Get involved: Pay and Reward survey 2019
This year’s Pay and Reward survey is now open for members to contribute until Wednesday 10 July. The published report (available from early Autumn) provides valuable information about the pay and benefits in different areas of the chemical sciences allowing members to make evidence-based about their careers.

In its 100th year, we want this report to be the most accurate, comprehensive and helpful yet, so we encourage all members to take part in this significant project. You should have received your personal link by email on 12 June. If you haven’t received your email then contact the Careers team.

Exploring the workplace for LGBT+ physical scientists
The Institute of Physics, Royal Astronomical Society and the Royal Society of Chemistry carried out the first ever survey of LGBT+ physical scientists in the UK, collecting evidence on workplace climate and experiences.

We present the results of this research, along with recommendations for how we can create a climate that enables everyone to be fully themselves in their workplace or place of study in our new report, launched on Wednesday 26 June.

Read it here: rsc.li/LGBT_report

Providing frontline and vital support for student mental health and wellbeing
A collaborative team from the Technician Commitment, Science Council, Institute of Physics, Royal Society of Biology, Royal Society of Chemistry, University of Liverpool and University of Nottingham undertook a national survey to highlight the important roles technicians play in student mental health and wellbeing.

The report offers a number of recommendations to the higher education and research sector, individual employers and to technicians themselves in order to ensure that all involved and fully supported and appropriately trained.

Member to Member Mentor Scheme – looking for mentees and mentors
The award winning Member to Member Mentor Scheme is continuing to grow. We have a number of mentors, with backgrounds in industry, who are ready to be matched with a mentee. If you’d like to be mentored by one of them please email careers@rsc.org for more details.

Latest updates on our policy work
With a programme of activities spanning research funding, mobility of scientists, open access, chemicals regulation, teacher supply, curriculum and much more, our goal is to shape the development of policy relevant to the chemical sciences.

Plan S: the future of Open Access publishing
We held a livestreamed panel discussion on Plan S at Burlington House. Reacting to changes to Plan S published just that morning, our panel of researchers explored its potential impacts and consequences, including cost implications and the need for a global rollout. The discussion was broadcast on our YouTube, Facebook and Twitter accounts and generated good online conversation, which fed into the panel discussion. The video recording is now available on our YouTube channel. Research Fortnight published a news piece covering the event and Nature News quoted Emma Wilson, Director of RSC Publishing, in their first reaction piece.

Breaking the Barriers outcomes: Grants for Carers
We launched the second phase of our Breaking the barriers report project, with the introduction of our Grants for Carers, through which members of our community can now apply for up to £1,000 per year to help them attend a chemistry-related meeting, conference or workshop or a professional development event. These grants have been introduced as part of the Breaking the Barriers action plan, after our research found that 78% of chemists working in UK academia felt that managing parenting and/or caring responsibilities had an impact on women’s retention and progression.

‘Future Waste’ and the role of chemistry
Our Policy & Evidence team, together with the Environment, Sustainability & Energy Division, co-organised a ‘Future Waste’ summit in Swansea. The event brought government, academia and industry together to help us shape our policy recommendations in the areas of critical raw materials (CRMs) in waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE), plastics and biopolymer alternatives (including a presentation on the findings of a discussion meeting on sustainable plastics hosted by our Materials Chemistry Division earlier this year), and food and farming waste. These are the critical areas of the government’s resources and waste strategy within the 25 year plan for the environment, where chemical scientists play key roles.

The importance of practical and technical skills in education
T-levels – new, 2-year, post-GCSE technical qualifications – are coming soon in England. Full updates on the Science T-level and our recent consultation responses are now on our website: https://www.rsc.org/campaigning-outreach/policy/importance-of-practical-technical-skills/

HCUK update: growing the talent pool in higher education and research funding post-Brexit
The Heads of Chemistry UK (HCUK) met in Warwick to discuss the future of chemical sciences in higher education and ways to grow the talent pool. Invited speakers included industry R&D managers, education experts and funders to explore the factors impacting graduate recruitment, future skills needs and the research funding environment.

The HCUK also held a dedicated policy workshop organised by the RSC and BEIS on the Sir Adrian Smith Independent Review on International Collaboration on Research and Innovation. The RSC submitted evidence to Sir Adrian Smith’s review, stressing that the UK should continue to participate in EU programmes as an associated country and other international collaboration opportunities should be developed in addition. We also highlighted the importance of curiosity-led, discovery research and used results from our Brexit Policy Survey earlier this year.

Spotlight: New Process for Awarding 40-year Gold Badges
As many of you know, any member who has been a part of the RSC for forty years is entitled to a Gold Badge. Until recently, there was no clear process in how the gold badges were sent to members, making it difficult to keep track of who had received their badge and who hadn’t, and resulting in many members not receiving their badge.

Going forward, our Membership team will write to members who are in their fortieth year of membership to offer them a formal letter of recognition and Gold Badge.

Our Membership team will work with UK and ROI Local Sections and ask UK and ROI members if they would like to receive these at a Local Section event.

To find out more about the new process, read the full blog post, or please contact our Membership team at membership@rsc.org if you have any queries concerning Gold Badges.

The June 2019 Networks Newsletter sees an update about the revised process for recognising long-standing members with commemorative Gold Badges. Contact our Membership team at membership@rsc.org with any comments or questions.

The Royal Society of Chemistry has 50,000 members spread across the globe, and we could not deliver our purpose without you.

We’ve recently considering how we recognise our members and their contributions to the chemical sciences community. Part of this is recognising and celebrating our long-serving members.

As many of you know, any member who has been a part of the RSC for forty years is entitled to a Gold Badge. Until recently, there was no clear process in how the gold badges were sent to members – some Local Sections requested badges throughout the year to present them to members, whereas some didn’t – making it difficult to keep track of who had received their badge and who hadn’t, and resulting in many members not receiving their badge.

In 2018, after feedback from members, our Membership team developed a process for sending the 40-year Gold Badges to members.

The process going forward

Each year, in about June, our Membership team will write to members who are in their fortieth year of membership to offer them a formal letter of recognition and Gold Badge.

For members based in the UK and ROI, our Membership team will contact the Local Sections to ask if they would like members to contact the Secretaries about receiving their badge at a member network event.

If the Local Section are happy to do this then the communication sent to the members in that Local Section will provide the contact details for the Secretary. The Secretary can contact our Membership team to request the badges and we will send them out along with formal letters to accompany the badges.

If the Local Section does not wish to be contacted – or if we receive no response – members will receive a letter informing them to contact Membership to receive their badge. Our Membership team will send the badge and letter formal to the member.

All members outside the UK and ROI will be receive a letter offering them a badge.

This is an annual process and will be done each year in June. As such, we ask that if you wish to organise events to recognise long-serving members you arrange these around when we will be sending communications out so that we can keep track of members who have received their Gold Badges.

Please contact the Membership team at membership@rsc.org if you have any queries concerning Gold Badges.

Latest updates on our policy work

With a programme of activities spanning research funding, mobility of scientists, open access, chemicals regulation, teacher supply, curriculum and much more, our goal is to shape the development of policy relevant to the chemical sciences.

Improving recognition of Higher Education teaching
Working with the Institute of Physics, the Physiological Society and the Royal Society of Biology, we’re conducting a survey to help us inform the HE STEM sector about developments in teaching and recognition of teaching staff.

Are you actively involved in teaching in a Higher Education setting in the UK? We’d love to hear from you. Please share your experiences: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/HESTEM/

Response on Scottish STEM education
As part of the Learned Societies’ Group, we responded to the Scottish Parliament’s Education and Skills Committee on Scottish STEM education and expressed concerns about narrowing of subject choices at secondary level in Scotland.

International chemistry survey reveals scale of Brexit concern
Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent policy survey, which looked at attitudes to aspects of the UK’s future relationship with the EU. We had nearly 5,800 responses, which gives us a good understanding of what our community think:

On EU funding programmes:
75% of respondents felt that impact on UK science and innovation of UK involvement in EU framework programmes like Horizon 2020 had been positive, and only 3% felt it had been negative.

We will: Continue to campaign for the UK’s full participation in the next framework programme – Horizon Europe.

On mobility and immigration:
84% of respondents felt freedom of movement had a positive impact on UK science and innovation, 71% felt it had a positive impact on their own career. 71% said the proposed new visa system would have a negative impact on UK science, in particular the proposed salary threshold.

We will: Use this as evidence when talking to Government about changes to the UK immigration processes and further explore your concerns about the proposed new visa system. Please get in touch if you can help us understand the impacts (positive and negative) of changes to visa and immigration policy on chemistry

On chemicals and product regulation after Brexit:
88% of respondents felt UK chemicals regulation should be harmonised with the EU (42%) or globally (46%), with only 4% preferring new and different UK chemicals legislation.

We will: Use this as further evidence to campaign for harmonised chemicals regulation, whether at the EU or global level and to campaign for a continued close partnership between the UK and EU agencies.

On the potential impact of No Brexit Deal:
84% of respondents said No Deal would be negative for UK science, compared with only 4% who thought it would be positive.

We will: Continue to highlight the risks of No Deal to policy makers (for example, this briefing to parliamentarians) as long as No Deal remains a possibility.

The May 2019 Networks Newsletter sees an update about the revised Chemists' Community Fund Volunteer Network Framework from Anna Dearden, the Chemists' Community Fund Manager. Contact Anna and the CCF team at ccfund@rsc.org with any comments or questions.

Over the past year the Chemists’ Community Fund has been consulting with our volunteers to revise the volunteering roles that support the work of the Fund. The key areas that we considered were:

  • the needs of our beneficiaries,
  • the priorities for the Fund (including the main need to raise awareness on the breadth of support and services available),
  • the practices of other benevolent funds, and
  • general good practice in recruiting, supporting and training volunteers (including managing risks and meeting our legal requirements).
The revised Volunteer Network Framework is now in place:
a62a95523ea6e7f5555982061785139d-huge-cc

The Local Coordinators will enable us to retain the important links that we have with each local section.

The Ambassadors will link with the Local Coordinator to support us to raise awareness of the Fund locally; this role can include raising awareness of the Fund at events, helping with sending Christmas cards, and supporting wellbeing workshops or retirement planning workshops.

The Visitor role is solely intended for undertaking visits to beneficiaries.

We currently have 50 volunteer Visitors, 17 Ambassadors and 32 Local Coordinators and we are actively seeking more members to volunteer with us in the new Ambassador role to raise awareness of the Fund to RSC members. It’s important to note that these roles are not mutually exclusive and a member can be in multiple roles.

To help our volunteers, we have developed distinct role descriptors and training resources for each role. In particular, each Visitor requires in-depth training and greater levels of support, due to the nature of the role and associated legal requirements. We are therefore limited in our capacity to provide this level of training for any volunteer who is not visiting beneficiaries.

Three bespoke training and guidance sessions for 35 Visitors have been delivered so far in 2019, working with a specialist charity, the Befriending Networks, to provide these training sessions. This training supported the new structure covering issues of confidentiality, regulation, and behaviours, and feedback from those who attended has been very positive.

Training for Ambassadors and Local Section Coordinators will now follow and this has been arranged for June 2019.

The work that all of our volunteers undertake is vitally important to enable us to provide the support that we do. We are very appreciative of their continued involvement with the Fund, enabling us all to support our beneficiaries.

If you have any questions or feedback on the volunteering roles, or are interested in joining us as a volunteer, please do let us know by emailing ccfund@rsc.org or call 01223 432 539.

Policy update: International chemistry survey reveals scale of Brexit concern

We surveyed nearly 5,800 chemical scientists about their views on mobility, research funding and chemicals regulation in the event of a no-deal Brexit. Our thought leadership piece briefly outlines our position and our community’s views, and there’s more detail in the briefing paper we shared with MPs ahead of a series of votes on a no-deal Brexit in Parliament.

A big thank you to everyone who responded to the survey, helping us to inform our policy positions and discussions with policymakers. We are already using the evidence from the survey to advise MPs and Civil Servants and will do more of this.

We welcome any feedback you have on what you would like included in this newsletter; please email any suggestions to networks@rsc.org.

Please feel free to encourage other members of your committee to read the Networks Newsletter blog.

The March 2019 Networks Newsletter sees an update about the Royal Society of Chemistry brand refresh. Contact the Networks team at networks@rsc.org with any comments or questions.

We’re very excited to announce that you will soon be seeing the results of our recent work to update our brand and logo.

About a year ago, we began the process of refreshing our brand to better support the delivery of our aims and mission, and to ensure our logo is fit for purpose in an increasingly digital world.

Our brand is our external personality and represents how we present ourselves. It encompasses who we are as an organisation and how we want to be perceived and positioned in the minds of our community.

Our member networks are one of the central ways we connect with chemical scientists across different disciplines, careers and countries. Because all of our activities work to support each other, we want our community around the world to easily recognise our activities,  services and products whenever and wherever you interact with us.

This doesn’t just apply to our logo. It’s our whole visual identity, including the colours and imagery we use, and importantly, how we tell our story. All of this together demonstrates our mission and purpose, and shows our community how we can support you.

Evolution not revolution
We conducted research with all of the different sections of our community and membership around the world to understand your perceptions of the Royal Society of Chemistry and inform our brand refresh.

Through this, we learnt that there is a lot of recognition in our current logo but it feels a bit dated and can be complicated to use. We won’t be changing it too much, but will be updating it so that it works better digitally and looks more modern.

We’ve also updated our positioning to more accurately reflect our role in the chemical sciences community and to better represent the breadth of our activities, the diverse nature of our organisation and the people we’re here to support.

Our refreshed brand will help us to communicate the impact of all of our activities more consistently and will ensure we remain modern and relevant to the needs of our community.

What do I need to do?
We’ll be rolling out the new logo and visual identity gradually, from the beginning of April, and will be in touch with updated logos for all of our divisions, interest groups and local sections to use on your materials and social media channels.

Because this is an update of our current brand, we’re not attempting to refresh everything at once. The rollout will be a gradual process, so there is no need to reprint any materials until they run out. This is more sustainable and cost effective, so you don’t need to worry about wastage.

Keep an eye out for further information on how to use our new logo and visuals in the next few weeks.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Networks team at networks@rsc.org.
