Spotlight: Introducing our updated brand and logo

We’re very excited to announce that you will soon be seeing the results of our recent work to update our brand and logo.

Through recent research, we learnt that there is a lot of recognition in our current logo but it feels a bit dated and can be complicated to use. We won’t be changing it too much, but will be updating it so that it works better digitally and looks more modern.

We’ll be rolling out the new logo and visual identity gradually, from the beginning of April, and will be in touch with updated logos for all of our Divisions, Interest Groups and Local Sections to use on your materials and social media channels.

The rollout will be a gradual process, so there is no need to reprint any materials until they run out.

Read the full blog post to find out more about our brand refresh and what you can look forward to seeing in April.

The February 2019 Networks Newsletter sees an update about Royal Society of Chemistry activities for the International Year of the Periodic Table from Anna Aldred, RSC Public Engagement Officer. Contact Anna and the IYPT team at outreach@rsc.org with any comments or questions.

The International Year of the Periodic Table is now underway! The official IUPAC international launch, sponsored by the RSC, took place on 29th January in Paris. RSC CEO, Robert Parker took the stage to give one of the opening addresses, take a look at the RSC news pages to learn more about this prestigious event.

Resources
The first collection of IYPT resources have now been launched:

  • The RSC Education Coordinators have released the first of their IYPT education resources which include the history of the periodic table, an atom simulator and periodic table bingo! Our popular Elements Top Trumps game, as well as supporting education documents, are also available as a fun addition to periodic table learning!
  • IYPT branded goodies are now on the Brand Centre! These include lanyards, cotton bags and T-shirts.
  • The Chemistry World website has now added a special IYPT page that shows articles and news stories related to the periodic table and the elements.

Get Involved
There will be lots of ways to get involved throughout 2019, keep an eye of the Network Newsletters, Voice, Update and the RSC IYPT webpage (rsc.li/IYPT), just a couple of reminders of the ongoing ways to get involved:

  • Making a nomination for the IUPAC periodic table of younger chemists. This initiative will highlight the diversity of careers, creativity and dedication of the young chemists leading us into the next century by honouring one younger chemist per element. More information can be found here: https://iupac.org/100/pt-of-chemist
  • Applying for an IYPT grant to support groups and members to celebrate IYPT. Committees of locals sections, interest groups and international sections are invited to apply for a member networks grant (of up to £1,000) to run activities celebrating IYPT. These grants can be used to support a range of activity including schools and public engagement events or periodic table themed events for members in a particular area. Additionally, RSC members in the UK and Ireland can apply for grants (of up to £500) to run IYPT events and activities. These grants are also open to applications from Learn Chemistry Partnership schools and Chem Socs. The first application deadline has now passed (14th January), the next one is Monday 15th April at 12:00. Funding is limited, so we advise you get your applications in as early as possible. More information can be found online here: www.rsc.org/iypt
  • If you have projects in mind that require larger amounts of funding, you can apply to the Outreach Fund. Through the Outreach Fund, you can apply for small grants (up to £2000) and large grants (£2001-£10000), please note that the next deadline for both of these is 12:00 on Monday 13th May 2019.

Stay In Touch
We know that many of you will be taking part in IYPT related activity this year and we would love to hear about what you’re getting up to:

  • If you’re a keen social media user, tag the IYPT hashtag so we can see what you are up to: #IYPT2019
  • To keep up to date with the RSC, follow us on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • Our Periodic Table of Stories: We are in our Element. By the end of 2019 we want to compile accounts of what our members and member networks have been up to during 2019 to honour IYPT. We are looking for submissions of stories or video or even artwork that can be incorporated into an exciting digital resource that will demonstrate the legacy of the RSC IYPT activity. For more information, email Anna Aldred (Public Engagement Officer) on outreach@rsc.org.

Events
As was outlined in the January Networks Newsletter, the RSC will be running a variety of events to honour IYPT. Details will be published as the year progresses on the IYPT webpage (www.rsc.org/IYPT), in Update, Voice and in these newsletters. The RSC teams will be looking to work in collaboration with the Member Networks to ensure the best success and reach of all events.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email Anna Aldred on outreach@rsc.org.

The February 2019 Networks Newsletter sees a special update from the Regions team about the Royal Society of Chemistry Education Coordinators and how they can support member networks. You can find your find your local Education Coordinator here.

From improving teacher confidence and recruiting the next generation of chemistry teachers to supporting outreach activities and forming connections, find out what our Regions Team is up to and how you can get involved.

The Regions Team works on the ground, connecting teachers, students, members, other partners and the general public with each other and the Royal Society of Chemistry to inspire and engage the next generation of chemical scientists.

Our Education Coordinators (ECs) play a key role in engaging teachers, education partners, and you, our members, with the Royal Society of Chemistry. Education Coordinators organise and contribute to a variety of activities to engage secondary school teachers of chemistry, from teacher conferences to industry site visits and smaller network meetings all advertised through regional newsletters. In addition, ECs introduce the RSC support available to trainee teachers and primary teachers at workshops and teacher sessions.

Education Coordinators also work closely with our local sections and members to support activities with schools including Top of the Bench and Schools’ Analyst Competition. They work with you to support local education funds and organise public outreach activities. If you are looking to find out more about a region, make contacts with schools, teachers or to find opportunities to get involved and volunteer at our outreach activities then your local Education Coordinator may be able to help.

In addition to the Education Coordinators, we have six Regional Programme Managers. The RPM’s role is to develop opportunities, foster partnerships and coordinate activities to help support regional priorities and deliver the RSC’s strategy across the UK and Ireland. RPMs also support RSC regional governance structures such as the RSC’s Regional Steering Groups and Regional Education Division Committees. RPMs share intelligence gathered from the Regions Team with colleagues and partners, and coordinate our work across the regions to ensure that key promotional messages are timely and consistent

In line with the RSC Education Strategy the main focus of the Regions Team is working with teachers, and the key areas that we support are:

  • Secondary teachers
We aim to support retention and development of teachers of chemistry. We achieve this by engaging teachers with their local chemistry community such as universities, businesses and industry and by promoting our resources and CPD offering. A particular focus for 2019 and beyond is to develop our support for schools in our free Learn Chemistry Partnership programme and to provide targeted support to priority audiences such as early career teachers through a regional Secondary Teacher Engagement and Professional Support plan.

  • Potential teachers and trainee teachers
We aim to increase the numbers of specialist chemistry teachers and support their professional development by introducing trainee chemistry teachers to the support available from the RSC by running bespoke sessions during their teacher training. We also promote teaching as a career and support the Department for Education Teacher Scholarship scheme in England and support probationer teachers in Scotland.

  • Primary teachers
We aim to improve confidence of primary teachers to teach science (with a focus on chemistry). We achieve this by running workshops for primary science leaders to help them disseminate resources and ideas for teaching science in their schools, clusters of schools and RSC supported Primary Science Quality Mark hubs.

  • Members
In addition to our work with teachers, the Regions Team works closely with members. We support regional member groups and structures such as local sections and Regional Steering groups.

As part of the RSC strategy to engage members as advocates, we offer opportunities to engage with schools and the public. The Regions team organises Outreach activities from attendance at Science and Technology Showcases for school-aged students to busking at train stations and stands at language, music and food festivals. Throughout 2018, 288 members participated at 37 events, engaging 14,734 members of the public with hands-on chemistry. These events are a fantastic opportunity for you to support our aims to increase the science capital within the population and provide a chance for you to develop skills and experience in delivering outreach.

If you would like to express an interest in volunteering at our Outreach events across the regions, you can contact the Education Coordinator in your region.

You can also meet members of the Regions Team and hear more about our work at our Regional Meetings; look out for further details about these events in upcoming newsletters.

Communications from across the RSC

Outreach community – call for expressions of interest
We want to support our members who are involved and interested in Outreach and are looking to get your views on what this could look like. If you would be interested in being a part of this community then get in touch with us by Thursday 31 January by going to https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/CFZCY6D.

Any RSC member who has an interest in science outreach is invited to register their interest using the above web link to be kept informed of updates and will be able to help support us to shape what an RSC outreach community could look like. Please also pass this on to members who you feel would be interested but may not have heard about it.

Volunteer recognition
Over 2000 members volunteer their time to support our initiatives, from sitting on committees to going out into the community and delivering outreach. We want to make sure that we are recognising our volunteers for what they do and are keen to hear from all of our community on how we could do this better. Whether you are an RSC volunteer or not we would love to hear your thoughts on recognition and would like to invite you to complete a short survey that can help us ensure that our volunteers are appreciated at all levels.

To share your opinion please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/3YNQXJV by Thursday 31 January.

RSC Publishing Author Experience Project – call for user testing and focus groups
The Author Experience (AX) project is a multi-year strategic initiative, being run by the RSC to address challenges our authors face from new Open Access initiatives (e.g., cOAlition S), piracy sites and questions about the industry business model. In an Open Access world, our customers are not institutions subscribing to our journals, but instead it’s the author paying us money in the form of the Article Processing Charge (APC). And those individual authors are used to the customer service and online experience of the likes of Apple, Google and Amazon.

We have started a six month pilot, aiming to move the needle on some key metrics in our flagship journal, Chemical Science. Between November 2018 and April 2019, the pilot team have an ambitious roadmap to address the length of time submission takes (currently an average of 1h 49min) and the volume of status enquiries (by providing visibility of where the article is in the publishing process).

We’ll also be centralising other customer interactions for Chemical Science so that we can improve visibility and data collection on author pain-points. Then, through the bigger AX project, we will tackle frustrations through the whole publishing journey taking an Agile, iterative approach to development that directly relates to our AX project vision to deliver a “researcher-led publishing experience through services that simplify and enhance the communication of the chemical sciences”.

We’ve started taking prototypes of our ideas out to real academics for their feedback; any member interested in participating in the AX project through user testing or focus groups can contact Steve Wilkes at ax@rsc.org.

The January 2019 Networks Newsletter sees a special update about Royal Society of Chemistry activities for the International Year of the Periodic Table from Gemma Wood. Contact Gemma and the IYPT team at outreach@rsc.org with any comments or questions.

2019 marks 150 years since Dmitri Mendeleev published his first periodic table of elements. To celebrate this pivotal moment in chemistry history, UNESCO has designated 2019 as the International Year of the Periodic Table. We’re excited to be leading the UK chemistry community’s contribution to the international celebrations headed by IUPAC and have a range of activities and initiatives lined up to celebrate this year.
We’re sponsoring the official IUPAC IYPT opening ceremony in January 2019 where our CEO, Dr Robert Parker will be giving one of the opening addresses. Throughout the year we’ll be hosting several flagship activities including:

  • A periodic table themed exhibition in Burlington House, curated by Dr Peter Wothers (Cambridge University)
  • A series of high profile periodic table themed public lectures to be held across the UK
  • Joint public outreach activities including lectures and demonstrations and hosted in collaboration with other professional bodies and relevant partners
  • An IUPAC global women’s breakfast event hosted by our President, Dame Carol Robinson to showcase the RSC’s commitment to supporting women in the chemical sciences
We’re also producing a range of events and activities across the organisation including:

  • Hands on activity outreach resources packs aimed at teachers for use at events and for use by members to deliver outreach to the public
  • A strand of policy work focussing on research and communication to inform public engagement and member activities on resource efficiency and scarcity of elements
  • IYPT branding of our journal publications and the publication of periodic table themed books
  • Dedicated periodic table themed content in Chemistry World including guest editorials and dedicated monthly content focussing on element discovery
These activities represent just some of the work that is happening centrally to celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table. We’ll be updating you on specific events via the Networks Newsletter, Voice and Update and further information can be found online here: www.rsc.org/IYPT
We’re also asking our member groups to support the success of IYPT. Ways to get involved include:

Applications will be considered in January (deadline 14 January), April, July and October and early application is recommended as funding is limited. More information can be found online here: www.rsc.org/iypt
  • Downloading the IYPT digital resource pack (coming soon) for support with key messages, branding, images and Power Point slides. Why not also visit the Brand Centre for IYPT branded promotional items?
Our new Public Engagement Officer, Anna Aldred, has recently joined the Member Communities team to support our IYPT activities and will be in touch in the near future with additional information. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to email outreach@rsc.org if you have any questions.

Chemists’ Community Fund Video

When RSC member Genevieve Ososki became dependent on a wheelchair, she thought she would have to give up working in a chemistry lab. A grant from the RSC’s Chemists’ Community Fund allowed her to purchase a sit-to-stand wheelchair, enabling her to carry out laboratory experiments safely and continue her studies.

Today the RSC has launched a video showcasing Genevieve’s story and highlighting the support available to members. Please read the news story or watch the full video here and share these links with your community.

Brexit Update

Brexit continues to dominate the news, with talks between the EU and UK on a Withdrawal Agreement (the ‘divorce settlement’) continuing at the time of writing. We know that the impact of Brexit on the chemical sciences and our chemistry community is an issue of huge concern, particularly in the event of a ‘no deal’ Brexit.  Thank you to all the member networks who have provided us with feedback and evidence on this – please do keep that coming. The RSC continues to campaign for a Brexit that works for science and innovation, as set out in Our vision for a future EU-UK Science Agreement. There’s a list of our recent campaigning actions at the end of this piece, but first a word on mobility/ immigration rules.

At the time of writing, we expect the Government to publish its Immigration White Paper in early November. The post-Brexit immigration rules matter, as chemistry departments, research groups and businesses need to have access to European and global talent pools to attract the right scientists – and perceptions can be as important as the rules themselves. Government seems likely to accept many recommendations of the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) reports on EEA migration in the UK and International Students in the UK, the subject of Jo Reynolds’ recent article. The MAC recommended that there should be a focus on high-skilled immigration and no particular preference for EEA or EU nationals, which the Prime Minister has suggested she supports. The MAC acknowledged that preferential treatment for EU nationals could be part of the agreement on the future economic partnership between the EU and UK, something we and other science bodies would support.

When the Government’s proposals are published, we would like your urgent help to understand in detail how they are likely to affect the chemical science and our community – and the top priorities for seeking to influence the legislation in parliament. We will be in touch with some questions soon and would appreciate your help here. We have clearly said, including in our to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee inquiry and in a recent that there must be easy movement of scientists between the UK and the EEA - and of scientists globally. This includes students and the dependents of those who move. We know this affects many members of our community, as individuals or because family members and/or colleagues are feeling the current uncertainty.

What is the RSC doing?

In 2016, Council agreed three priority areas for the RSC’s Brexit work. Our three ‘asks’ to implement these are:
  1. The UK needs to secure associated country status in the Horizon Europe programme, (the 9th Framework Programme for science and innovation). UK participation in EU framework programmes brings benefits to both UK and EU researchers.
  2. There must be easy movement of scientists between the UK and the EEA. This includes students and the dependents of those who move.
  3. Discussions between scientists globally are critical to achieving harmonised and proportionate decision-making in regulation. Effective cooperation and continued data sharing between the UK and the EU is essential in supporting our future trading relationship.
Recent actions in support of this include:

Horizon Europe
  • We work directly with the Government Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) to input on science and Brexit. Past President and Member Communities’ Board chair John Holman represents the RSC and others on the High-Lever Stakeholder Working Group and Tanya Sheridan on its sub-group.
  • We researched and published a set of members’ case studies illustrating the benefits of UK participation in Horizon Europe. We have shared these with Government and with other science bodies.
  • We developed our policy position on Horizon Europe and fed in to BEIS and European Chemical and Molecular Society (EuChemS) submissions.
Easy Movement
  • We submitted evidence to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee inquiry on ‘an immigration system for science and innovation’ to emphasise the importance of easy movement for scientists, including for short-term visits.
  • We wrote up the findings from analysis of our conferences into an article and saw this data has influenced the Committee, as they mentioned it in their report.
Chemicals regulation
  • John Holman wrote to DEFRA ministers, setting out our concerns around chemicals regulation, in the context of Brexit – including the absence of clear arrangements for scientific collaboration to support chemicals regulation during the transition period.
  • We also raised our concerns with the Environmental Audit Committee in June 2018.
  • We flagged the lack of clarity around future chemicals regulation arrangements when responding to DEFRA’s Environmental Principles and Governance’ consultation. A group of members, with the Policy team, developed a set of principles for the management of chemicals in the environment ‘Principles for the management of chemicals in the Environment’ in response.
  • Cam Alexander-White proactively flagged our concerns on chemicals regulation to the House of Lords EU committee and followed up with two letters in August and October. This provided briefing material for the Committee to ask Michael Gove directly about the problems in chemicals regulation in the event of a no deal Brexit.
