More opportunities for additional funding

The Member Networks Committee have recently requested that:
  • We increase the opportunities for our Interest Groups to apply for top up funding from twice a year to quarterly.
  • We create a top up fund for our Local Sections in the UK and Ireland which will run in parallel to the Interest Group fund.

These changes have now been implemented and application will now be accepted using the forms available online quarterly. The deadlines for applications will be 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. Applications will be reviewed by a sub-group of Member Networks Committee.

The criteria for applications for both networks are outlined on relevant application form. If you have any questions about the application or reviewing process please feel free to contact us.

NG: We are currently working to improve the funding review process for our Local Sections outwith the UK and Ireland which is why this additional funding opportunity is not currently open to all of our Local Sections.

Join us in celebrating LGBTSTEM Day on Thursday 5 July
Thursday 5 July will be the first International Day of LGBTQ people in STEM, organised by Pride in STEM, House of STEM, InterEngineering and Out in STEM. Studies have shown that LGBT people continue to struggle to be out and open in science and are also less likely to be retained in science than their heterosexual peers.
LGBTSTEM Day is an opportunity to improve the visibility and representation of LGBT people in STEM, help them access and share resources, and build a stronger LGBT community. We’re supporting the day with lots of social media activity and articles, so keep an eye on our news pages and join the conversation on Twitter with #LGBTSTEMDay.
You can share your story with us by emailing pressoffice@rsc.org. Please do encourage your network members to get involved. Pride in STEM have put together a handy toolkit for the day to give you some inspiration.
You can also join our network for LGBT physical scientists, co-run with the Institute of Physics and Royal Astronomical Society.

GDPR
As most people are now aware the General Data Protection Regulation was introduced on 25 May 2018.
Links to the updated handbook, rules and GDPR guidelines and resources were sent to all Chairs, Secretaries and Treasurers of all of our member networks along with our International Representatives, Early Career Representative and Academic Representatives on Friday 18 May 2018. If you have any queries about GDPR relating to the work of our member networks please refer to the guidelines and if necessary email Networks@rsc.org.

Recognising our volunteers
We have been highlighting the 2018 winners of our Awards for Service and Inspirational Member and Committee Awards both on our website and through our normal social media channels. This year saw an increase in the number of excellent nominations received for these awards which is a testament to the wonderful work of our members.
Full information about the award winners is available in the news section of our website.

Volunteers Week 1-7 June
We would like to encourage you to take this opportunity to thank those around you and acknowledge the time that they give. This could be other members of your committee or you know someone that is involved with outreach events for example. If you use Twitter then please do thank them using #Time4Chem and link to us @RoySocChem, or just say thank you personally to those individuals.
Do you know anyone that is interested in volunteering with us? If you do please direct them to our new volunteering pages.

New members campaign
As part of the new 1st year membership pathway, introduced in March, all new members are sent a communication at 4 weeks of membership that highlights the Interest Groups and encourages new members to subscribe.  This communication is tailored by membership category so is clear as to the number of groups each recipient is able to subscribe.  This has been sent out twice so far and we have seen a good response from new members wanting to taking up groups.
In addition to the new members campaign, we are due to run a campaign to existing members in July.  This will be targeted by category and encourage those who have not subscribed to the number of groups they are able to.  We will expect this to create a good uptake in subscribers to the Interest Groups and raise the awareness of the groups among our members.

GDPR – Toolkit for Member Networks - UPDATE
I just wanted to update you all on the progress of the anticipated resources to support our networks in complying with the new General Data Protection Regulation.

I would like to reassure you that the resources are being produced and will be made available soon. As you may know the ICO can make amendments to the regulation at any time until 25 May 2018. An email will be sent to the Chairs, Secretaries and Treasurers in the next month with a link to the completed resources.

As noted by the Information Commissioner the data storage requirements of the new regulation are not a drastic change to the requirements of the current Data Protection Act and as such we advise that you continue to maintain your data as you always have done in compliance with our rules.

If you have any questions please email networks@rsc.org.

Please remember that you can contact the Networks Team at any time for support or guidance at any time.

GDPR – Toolkit for Member Networks
As you are all probably aware the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is coming into force on 25 May 2018. The rules, in general, are very similar to the current Data Protection Act but there will be a much higher penalty, both for the organisation and individuals, involved in a breach of data protection.
We will be providing all of our member networks with a toolkit to support your compliance with the new regulation – we hope to have this sent to all committee members in April. We would like to emphasise that the reason this is coming to you so close to the compliance deadline is that the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has still not finalised some details of the regulation so we are waiting for some vital pieces of information to ensure that you are sent the correct details.
Please delete any old data lists, delegate lists, contact details from your computers which you may have saved from past RSC business.
We will, of course, do our best to offer you all of the support you need to remain compliant but we do need your cooperation in adhering to the new law.
If you have any questions please email networks@rsc.org.

Rules for Member Networks – Update
Please note that in February the Membership and Qualifications Board approved an update to the rules for member networks to include the following:
3.5: All members must comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (GDPR).
The rules are updated online here.

Expenses Forms
Please be aware that our Finance Team can no longer process expenses submitted on hard copy forms or the old electronic forms. Please use the form available online here (http://www.rsc.org/Membership/Networking/InterestGroups/FormsDocuments.asp) for all expenses in the future.

Communicating with Member Networks Committee
As you know the Member Networks Committee (MNC) is responsible for overseeing the activities and support of all of our member networks. We hope that you receive the support you need from the Networks Team to fulfil your roles as volunteers but we would like to remind you that you should also feel able to submit any discussion points or issues to your relevant Regional Steering Group (RSG) through the appropriate representative. Often issues or questions can be answered by other volunteers or staff as part of the RSG meeting but if this is not possible then it will be escalated to MNC by the RSG Chair.
  • Local Sections – this is your main route to raise concerns regarding the governance of your network
  • Interest Groups – if your issue is not appropriate to raise through an RSG then you can raise it with one of our two Interest Group Representatives on MNC (Helen Ryder (Formulation Science and Technology Group) and Rachel Evans – Photochemistry Group) who can be reached by emailing networks@rsc.org.
  • AD and ED Regions – although you have direct reporting lines to your Divisions please feel free to also use this route for communication, we will always share any concerns with the relevant Division Council.

Please remember that you can contact the Networks Team at any time for support or guidance at any time.

Financial Report Deadline Change
Due to changes made by our external auditors the deadline for all financial reports and associated paperwork will be 9th February 2018.

Local Section Day 2017
The first Local Section Day on 14 October was a great success. With over 30 Local Section committees from the UK and Ireland represented we celebrated the volume and diversity of activities run by our Local Section volunteers, discussed ways to enhance their support of our wider membership and had some vibrant discussions where the members shared their experiences. We also celebrated those Local Section members who had won awards this year for their activities over lunch.

Interest Group Forum 2017
The inaugural Interest Group Forum which is the annual governance meeting for all of our Interest Groups took place on 26 October. With over 40 committees represented they heard about our governance review, the changes to data protection regulation and the new member benefits packages. We spent time forging new collaborations between groups and sharing experiences regarding social media, organising events, webinars and engaging members in the early stages of their careers. We very much enjoyed the day and had excellent feedback from members attending.

Periodic table
We are pleased to announce that, as a direct result of feedback from committee members, periodic tables are now available on the brand centre.

Chemistry events research
Some recipients may have received a separate message last week promoting the Royal Society of Chemistry events survey; please accept our apologies if you are reading this for the second time.

To develop and improve what we offer, we would like to find out more about your experiences of the events and conferences we run for the global chemistry community. Please give us ten minutes of your time to tell us about the type of events you currently attend, and about the types of events you would like to see from the Royal Society of Chemistry in the future.

The survey is part of the market research and community engagement activity that supports the 2017 - 2021 Royal Society of Chemistry Events Strategy Project. The project aims to deliver an effective and sustainable programme of community-focused conferences and events based on the needs of our members and the wider chemical sciences community.

Take the survey
This survey is being run on behalf of the Royal Society of Chemistry by our research partner, Insightful Marketing & Research.
Thank you in advance for your feedback.
