Dear All,

With Diversity in STEM currently being high on the political agenda in many universities and following the published report on the BME attainment gap, we in the Chemistry department of the University of Bristol are pioneering an event that will help campaign for much needed interdepartmental change in how BME students are taught and supported. This ‘Being BME in STEM’ event will take place on Wednesday 6 February 2019 1-4pm in the PhD Lounge of the university’s Chemistry Building.

You are invited to voice your opinions on the BME experience within STEM departments at institutions delivering higher education. You will be able to discuss how you want to see your department change in order to become a more inclusive environment for BME students. You will be able help put together an action plan that will be implemented in the future development of your department, being a part of the change you want to see. If you teach Chemistry at any level, we believe your participation in this event could be a part of developing actions to improve your department for the BME students you teach.

Additionally, there will be a free food and drinks reception along with local/national companies. Food will be from different BME cultures such as North African, Caribbean, Sri Lankan, Indian etc. and drinks will be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
