RSC Books - John Emsley’s latest Bestseller!

A Healthy, Wealthy, Sustainable WorldJohn Emsley
Price £18.99
The world stands at a crossroads. What route to the future should we take? The road to a sustainable future beckons, but what effect will this have on chemistry, which appears so dependent on fossil resources?
This latest book from award-winning science writer
John Emsley, with a foreword by C David Garner, deals with the things we regard as essential to a developed lifestyle and which depend on chemistry, namely food, water, fuel, healing drugs and plastics, as well as other areas where its role is less obvious, such as city living and sport.
John is best known for his series of highly readable popular science books about everyday chemistry, some of which have run into multiple editions and printings in the UK, and all of which have been translated into several other languages. You may remember the true crime and chemistry stories of
Molecules of Murder: Criminal Molecules and Classic Cases and the reader's journey of discovery into the world of dangerous organic poisons.
A Healthy, Wealthy, Sustainable World explains the roles of chemistry in areas of life ranging from the entirely personal to the global and makes fascinating reading for both scientists and non-scientists alike.

Notices for RSC Groups
The dates for the
General Assembly 2011 have been announced
11-12 November 2011 in Birmingham, UK. More information will be available in due course.
Thank you to all Sections which have responded to the activity report request. These reports have highlighted the breath and depth of work undertaken by the Local Sections. The feedback received will be considered at the April CLS meeting so for those sections which have not yet returned the form, you may wish to forward any outstanding forms to
networks@rsc.org ahead of this agenda item.
The Hidden Science Map, an interesting new initiative launched by the Science Council (UK), attempts to encourage scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians to tell the world about the science they use everyday. Contributions are welcomed from all over the world and can be uploaded here.
The Hidden Science Map will broaden younger peoples perceptions on the sort of jobs and careers science could lead to by emphasising the the amazing range of different jobs there are out there. It can also be used to find people in your area!
Interest Group Annual Reports
Please can all Interest Groups Secretaries who have not yet submitted their annual report to Fiona McMillan send them to
interestgroups@rsc.org as soon as possible as they need to be passed on to the appropriate Division Council/Executive by the end of March. Although the requirement to submit these annual reports is set out in the Interest Group Rules it has become apparent that some Groups have not been asked to submit this report in the past. If you have not previously completed one of these reports please don’t hesitate to contact Fiona with any questions.
Interest Group Financial Reports
Please be aware that until the annual financial reports are submitted to the RSC Finance Department Interest Groups will not receive their 2011 grant.
Recently you may have received an invitation to attend New Volunteer Training in the Summer 2011 – if you have not already done so, please contact Benfund@rsc.org to let us know if you are able to attend or not
