Dear Member,

Welcome to the July edition of the Networks Newsletter.  These monthly newsletters aim to keep all member networks updated with news describing how to get involved, as well as information of relevant events, services and new initiatives from the RSC Networks Team.

Toxicology Research publishes first issue

The first issue of new RSC journal Toxicology Research is now available online. Showcasing the latest toxicology research, issue 1 includes reviews by Lawrence Lash on mitochondrial glutathione in toxicology and disease of the kidneys and by Catherine Priestley and colleagues at AstraZeneca in the UK, focusing on the emerging field of epigenetics and its relevance to drug safety.

Toxicology Research is a multidisciplinary journal covering both the fundamental and applied physiological aspects of toxicology, published in partnership with the British Toxicology Society and the Chinese Society of Toxicology. Articles published in 2012 and 2013 are free to access online to all individuals who have signed up for an RSC Publishing Personal Account, and to all existing RSC customers with an IP address registered.

Xiangfeng Duan wins the 2012 Journal of Materials Chemistry Lectureship

The lectureship was set-up in 2009 to recognise an early-career researcher in the field of materials chemistry. Please find more information on the Journal of Materials Chemistry blog.

Regional Steering Groups

This month has seen the first two Regional Steering Group meetings in the Eastern and North West Regions. The groups provide a forum for discussion between all RSC Networks and RSC staff. The inaugural Eastern Region meeting was held on 10 July in Thomas Graham House and was well attended by 7 members representing Local Sections, Interest Groups, Academic, Industrial and Younger Member Representatives along with the Regional Coordinator (Education). There was animated discussion about the activities of the represented networks and how they could better collaborate, as well as comparing local venues. The North West Region meeting was held on 11 July in Manchester and the members focussed their discussions on education and collaboration.

The aim of these meetings is to promote collaboration and discussion between members One suggestion which came up was for the production of literature aimed at recruiting new Volunteer Visitors. This suggestion has now been passed on to RSC staff who hope to have the finished product in time for the General Assembly in November. Dates have now been set for almost all of the other steering group meetings and the first Member Networks Committee (consisting of the 10 steering group Chairs) will be held at the General Assembly.

RSC Christmas Cards

If you wish to order RSC Christmas cards to send out to selected members of your section, please send an email request to msadmin@rsc.org by 28 September.
