Dear Member,

Welcome to the August edition of the Networks Newsletter.  These monthly newsletters aim to keep all member networks updated with news describing how to get involved, as well as information of relevant events, services and new initiatives from the RSC Networks Team.

RSC Leadership Team Changes

RSC chief executive Robert Parker has decided to restructure the leadership team as part of a broader strategy to enable an already successful RSC to achieve even greater things.

Council approved the decision, and RSC president Lesley Yellowlees said in a message to staff: “All the Trustees were very enthusiastic about [Robert’s strategy] and we all gave it our 100% backing – I’m certain that you too will support it.”

Following the reorganisation, Neville Reed (Managing Director of Science, Education and Industry), Jackie Mitchell (Director, HR & OD) and Wynne Beaumont (Finance Director) have left the organisation.  For further detail on the new management structure of the RSC, please see the Leadership Team page on our website. rsc.li/leadership

RSC Group Committee Meetings in Burlington House

We are delighted to announce that following a review of the charges for RSC Groups using the Chemistry Centre, no room charge will be made for committee meetings from Monday 27 August 2012. As promised at the General Assembly 2011, Helen Pain has reviewed all of the room charges at the Chemistry Centre. RSC Groups will still receive the same significant discount on room rates for non-committee meetings and all catering will be charged in the usual way.

To ensure that you are not charged you must state that the room is for a committee meeting at the time of booking. All bookings and enquiries regarding the Chemistry Centre should be made via email to BHrooms@rsc.org.

We have an exciting announcement regarding: Journal of Materials Chemistry

Journal of Materials Chemistry will shortly be closing to new submissions and, from 2013, will be published as three separate and new journals:
Journal of Materials Chemistry A (Materials for Energy and Sustainability); Journal of Materials Chemistry B (Materials for Biology and Medicine); Journal of Materials Chemistry C (Materials for Electronic and Optical Devices).
For further information on these new journals, please see here.

Are students finding differentiation difficult? Integration impossible? Help is on its way...

The new edition of Maths for Chemists (RRP: £24.95), combines Volumes I and II of the hugely successful Tutorial Chemistry Texts, to provide an excellent resource for all undergraduate chemistry students particularly focussing on the needs of students who may not have studied mathematics beyond GCSE level (or equivalent). The text is introductory in nature and adopts a sympathetic approach for students who need support and understanding in working with the diverse mathematical tools required in a typical chemistry degree course. It provides a concise account of the basic principles underlying a given subject, embodying an independent-learning philosophy and including worked examples. For more details on this exciting new title, or to order your copy today, please visit the website (http://www.rsc.org/shop/books/2012/9781849733595.asp)

Call for Higher Education Resources

The Royal Society of Chemistry is sourcing Higher Education resources from the chemistry teaching community. This is in collaboration with the Higher Education Academy as part of their Open Education Resources programme. If you or any of your contacts and colleagues have any suitable resources you are willing to share on our e-platform Learn Chemistry, please contact Rosalind Onions at onionsr@rsc.org.

RSC Christmas Cards

If you wish to order RSC Christmas cards to send out to selected members of your section, please send an email request to msadmin@rsc.org by 28 September. Please include the selection criteria of the members (e.g. over 70 or retired) and we will arrange to dispatch the cards and address labels to you at the end of October.
