Communications from across the RSC

How do you view careers in different sectors, and the RSC as an employer?
The survey will help us to understand more about how our members view careers in different sectors and, and how people see the Royal Society of Chemistry as an employer. The survey should take 5-10 minutes to complete. If you complete the survey you will have the opportunity to enter the prize draw to win an iPad mini or £250 Amazon vouchers.
Please click on this link to launch the survey.
The survey is being conducted by Bernard Hodes UK, a consultancy which specialises in helping employers to attract and retain talented staff. Your answers will be treated as confidential and will only be used for research purposes.

Do you know anyone who is interested in Science Communication?
We have two science communication competitions at the moment: Take 1… minute for chemistry in health and the Chemistry World science communication competition. The Take 1 competition is a fantastic opportunity for undergraduate, postgraduate, post-doctorate students and early career researchers (both members and non-members) to engage with the Royal Society of Chemistry, whilst the Chemistry World competition is open to everybody, and the winners will be rewarded with a £500 cash prize.

I hope you all have a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Kind regards,
Marie

Dear all,

I hope you are well. We have recently been looking at all the different ways that we communicate with our members and a common theme we have found is that you can often receive the same information from us multiple times. To avoid this duplication and so we don’t overwhelm you with emails, we have changed the content that will be in this newsletter. We hope this will make it more effective and useful for you by including information of direct interest to you in your role. We welcome any feedback you have on what you would like included in this newsletter; please email any suggestions to us at networks.

Communications from across the RSC

Your events in the RSC News diary

In each issue of RSC News, we announce the events taking place in the month of publication and the following month. For example, the May issue will cover events in May and June.

All events are automatically pulled off our events database. In order for us to compile the list ahead of print, we require sufficient advance notice. Therefore, if you would like an event to be included in the printed version of RSC News, please ensure that you have uploaded it to the events database by the end of the month two months ahead of the issue date. For example, events in May and June to be publicised in the May issue must be uploaded to the database by the end of March.

Working with Wikipedia

We have recently welcomed as a member of staff in the Communications and Campaign team our first Wikimedian in Residence (WiR), Andy Mabbett.

He is an experienced editor of Wikipedia and its various sister projects, and in his role Andy will foster collaboration between our staff, members, Wikipedians, the research community and the general public, with the aim of better understanding and improving chemistry related content on Wikipedia.

We’d like to offer local sections and interest groups the opportunity to meet with Andy, and to attend workshops and training sessions to hear more about Wikipedia and its role for the communication of science.

If you are interested in hosting an event with our Wikimedian in Residence please get in touch with Andy by e-mail<mailto:mabbetta@rsc.org>. Andy is also keen to hear from (or of) any members who are themselves the subject of a Wikipedia biography.

If you have any questions, please contact RSC News<mailto:rscnews@rsc.org>.

This information will also be posted on MyRSC.

Kind regards,

Marie

Our new events database: All our events at your fingertips

You only need to take one look at our Diary in RSC News every month to see just how many conferences, symposia, networking meetings, outreach activities and many more events we and our members organise every month. To make it easier for you to find out what is happening where and when, we have been making changes to our online events database.

We have implemented a new browse and search function that will make it easier for you to find what you are looking for. We have also changed the technology behind the database, so that an individual web page is automatically created for each event that is uploaded to the database.

To access the database and take a look at how you can search events by region and location or event type and date, visit www.rsc.org/events

Once you have tried out the new events website and database, we’d love to hear your feedback. It will help us improve the system to make sure it meets our community’s needs. So please let us know what you think by emailing events@rsc.org

Chemical Analysis Metadata Platform (ChAMP) Project – Get involved!

A collaborative project between the University of North Florida and the Royal Society of Chemistry, the ChAMP project aims to develop standardized metadata, controlled vocabularies, and an ontology for the characterization of chemical analysis methodologies. The intent of ChAMP is to help organizations, business sectors, societies, and journal publishers in the area of chemical analysis formulate standards for reporting, annotating and semantically linking research on analytical methods and applications. Visit the project website at http://champ-project.org.

Rewarding Excellence, Gaining Recognition

Achievements by individuals and teams in advancing the chemical sciences should be celebrated. That’s why we have over 80 prizes and awards covering all areas of the chemical sciences. And our Industry & Technology Awards, refocused for 2015, recognise outstanding innovation, community engagement, industry–academia collaborations, entrepreneurship and science in the chemical sciences industry. If you know someone who deserves recognition, nominate them today.
