Ammonium Chloride

Ammonium Chloride

Has anyone ever heard of, or indeed used, Ammonium Chloride in an engineering application? E.g. As either some sort of thread cleaner or locking mechanism when a threaded stay is screwed into a piston head.
We found reference to use of Sal Ammonium in an old document, but no explanation as to why and to what purpose. Thanks.

Hello C Chile's, i know that according to Newth 1903 ammonium chloride in combination with potash or slaked lime ,calcium chloride and water and ammonia is formed. It may be  that in using potash ,a means of cleaning is to use ammonium chloride. Interestingly coal has ~2% of nitrogen and  on heating produces ammonia. Giving the 'ammoniacal liquid' found in gas works. I hope that helps.
