The group acts to promote Bio-Organic chemistry principally by organising meetings and is run by a committee consisting of a chairman, a secretary, the treasurer and six members.
Bio-Organic Chemistry can be defined as the application of chemical principles and techniques to solve biological problems. It encompasses:
    • The synthesis of natural products and other biologically active or medicinal compounds.
    • The use of micro-organisms or enzymes as synthetic reagents (biotransformations)
    • The biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and the elucidation of biological reaction mechanisms
The development of gene manipulation technology and genomic information provides enormous opportunities for the developments in Bio-Organic Chemistry.

Please note that membership of this forum does not equate to membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry Chemical Biology and Bioorganic Chemistry Group.
Membership of the Interest Group is open to all members of the Royal Society of Chemistry - please email membership@rsc.org for further information.
